Understanding Paediatric Surgery Care

When a child becomes unwell or develops persistent symptoms, parents will often consult a pediatrician or general practitioner first. In some cases, the child may be referred to a paediatric surgeon for further evaluation to determine whether surgical treatment is necessary. Parents are also welcome to contact the clinic directly with any enquiries or to arrange a consultation.
This collaborative approach helps ensure that children receive the right care at the right time.
When to Consider Seeing a Paediatric Surgeon?
Foreskin-related Conditions
Conditions that may benefit from circumcision include recurrent inflammation or infection of the foreskin, as well as persistent ballooning of the foreskin associated with phimosis.
Congenital Penile & Urological Conditions
Includes conditions such as hypospadias, chordee, hydronephrosis, pelvi-ureteric junction obstruction (PUJO) and vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). Surgical correction is performed when clinically indicated.
Groin Conditions
Includes hernia, hydrocele and undescended testis. Surgical repair is often recommended to help prevent complications such as strangulation or fertility issues later in life.
Abnormal Swellings
Some swellings simply require observation, while others may need diagnostic imaging, drainage, biopsy, or surgical removal depending on the underlying condition.
Abdominal & Chest Conditions
Abdominal masses require early surgical assessment. Thoracic conditions such as recurrent pneumothorax and empyema may benefit from surgery when conservative treatment is insufficient.
Ovarian & Pelvic Conditions
Ovarian cysts may require monitoring or surgery depending on size and symptoms, while conditions such as an imperforate hymen can be treated with a minor surgical procedure when indicated.

Frequently Asked Questions
Minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery uses small incisions and specialised instruments. In suitable cases, it may result in less pain, smaller scars, and a faster recovery.
A paediatrician provides general medical care for children, including vaccinations, growth and developmental monitoring, and the treatment of common illnesses. A paediatric surgeon evaluates and manages conditions that may require surgical treatment. When appropriate, a paediatrician may refer a child to a paediatric surgeon for further assessment, and a paediatric surgeon may also work closely with the paediatrician as part of the child's ongoing care
Treatment for appendicitis depends on the severity of the condition. Most children are treated with an appendicectomy (surgical removal of the appendix), usually performed laparoscopically, while selected cases of uncomplicated appendicitis may be managed with antibiotics alone. If the appendix has ruptured or an abscess has formed, treatment may include intravenous antibiotics, drainage of the abscess, and surgery depending on the child's condition.
If your child has an abdominal mass, recurrent groin swelling, urinary anatomical abnormalities, or suspected congenital anatomical conditions, a paediatric surgical evaluation is recommended.
