Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions does a paediatric surgeon treat?

A paediatric surgeon manages a wide range of surgical conditions affecting infants, children, and adolescents. These include both elective and emergency conditions such as appendicitis, hernias, hydroceles, undescended testes, hydronephrosis, vesicoureteral reflux (VUR), hypospadias, as well as selected abdominal and thoracic conditions that may require surgical management.

What happens during the first consultation?

During the first consultation, the doctor will take a detailed medical history, discuss your child’s symptoms, and perform a physical examination. If necessary, additional investigations such as blood tests or imaging studies may be arranged to help confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment options, including both surgical and non-surgical approaches, will then be discussed based on the findings.

When should my child seek paediatric surgery care in Singapore?

Parents may consider seeking paediatric surgery consult for the following conditions:

Foreskin - related Conditions

Conditions that may benefit from circumcision include recurrent inflammation or infection of the foreskin, as well as persistent ballooning of the foreskin associated with phimosis.

Congenital Penile & Urological Conditions

Includes conditions such as hypospadias, chordee, hydronephrosis, pelvi-ureteric junction obstruction (PUJO) and vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). These conditions may cause recurrent urinary infections, or deterioration of renal function. Surgical correction is performed when clinically indicated to improve long-term outcomes.

Groin Conditions (Hernia, Hydrocele, Undescended Testis)

These conditions are commonly managed by a paediatric surgical practice. Surgical repair is often recommended to prevent complications such as strangulation or fertility issues later in life.

Abnormal Swellings under the Skin or in Deeper tissues.

Some swellings simply require observation, while others may need diagnostic imaging, drainage, biopsy, or surgical removal.

Abdominal and Chest Conditions

Abdominal masses require early surgical assessment. Thoracic conditions like recurrent pneumothorax and empyema may benefit from surgical intervention when conservative treatment is not sufficient.

Ovarian & Pelvic Conditions

Treatment depends on the child's age, symptoms, and the underlying condition. Ovarian cysts are often monitored with ultrasound and may require surgery if they are large, persistent, or causing complications, while an imperforate hymen is treated with a minor surgical procedure (hymenotomy) to create an opening and relieve the obstruction.

If your child has persistent abdominal pain, groin swelling, urinary abnormalities, or suspected congenital conditions, a paediatric surgical evaluation is recommended. You can come and consult with Dr. Cheong Yee Ling at Nobel Paediatric Surgery Centre, Mount Elizabeth Novena & Gleneagles, Singapore.

Where will the surgery take place?

Dr. Cheong is accredited to perform surgery in various private hospitals and day-surgery centres across Singapore.

Will my insurance cover consultation and procedures?
