The liver is a vital organ responsible for the processing of nutrition, production of proteins and disposal of waste products from our body. Serious liver disease may present with symptoms like jaundice (yellow eyes and skin), lethargy, bleeding, confusion, abdominal distension and leg swelling. However, early liver disease has no symptoms, and is often detected on routine blood tests and liver scans.
It is important to treat liver diseases early, before the liver is irreversibly damaged (liver failure) or develops severe scarring (cirrhosis). A delay in seeking treatment may lead to either death or the development of liver cancer.

Causes of Liver Disease
Common causes of liver disease include Viral Hepatitis (A, B, C and E), Fatty Liver and Drug Induced Liver Injury, while less common ones include Autoimmune Hepatitis and Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC). It is important to diagnose the cause of the liver disease and the extent of the liver damage, in order to deliver the appropriate treatment.
While some liver diseases like Hepatitis C can be cured. Others, like Hepatitis B and Fatty Liver can be controlled and will require long-term surveillance. Liver monitoring is done with blood tests and scans to detect the extent of liver scarring (fibrosis) and amount of fat in the liver
