FAQs
Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) is a specialized field of medicine focused on women's reproductive health, pregnancy, and childbirth. It combines two key areas:
Obstetrics – The care of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Obstetricians ensure a safe pregnancy and delivery for both mother and baby.
Gynaecology – The diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the female reproductive system, including menstrual disorders, fertility concerns, menopause, and gynaecological conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, and ovarian cysts.
Women experience different health needs at various life stages, from puberty to menopause. Regular check-ups with an O&G specialist help monitor reproductive health, prevent complications, and provide essential care for conditions like:
- Pregnancy and fertility concerns
- Menstrual irregularities and hormonal imbalances
- Uterine and ovarian conditions (e.g., fibroids, cysts, endometriosis)
- Contraceptive counseling and family planning
- Cancer screenings and preventive healthcare
If you are planning a pregnancy or need prenatal care
- Experiencing irregular periods, heavy bleeding, or severe menstrual pain
- Facing fertility challenges or planning contraception
- Needing routine gynaecological check-ups or screenings for HPV, cervical, or breast cancer
Regular check-ups are also recommended for preventive healthcare.
Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) in gynaecology refers to advanced surgical techniques that use small incisions instead of traditional open surgery. These procedures offer less pain, faster recovery, minimal scarring, and reduced risk of complications, making them a preferred choice for treating many gynaecological conditions.
MIS procedures are performed using specialized instruments and cameras to enhance precision and safety. Common techniques include:
Laparoscopic Surgery (Keyhole Surgery) – A thin tube with a camera (laparoscope) is inserted through small incisions to diagnose and treat conditions such as fibroids, ovarian cysts, and endometriosis.
Hysteroscopic Surgery – A thin, lighted tube (hysteroscope) is inserted through the vagina to diagnose and treat conditions inside the uterus, such as polyps or fibroids.
Minimally invasive surgery is a safe and effective option for many gynaecological conditions. If you’re experiencing persistent pelvic pain, heavy periods, or fertility issues, a consultation with a gynaecologist can help determine the best treatment for you.

Benefits of Minimally Invasive Surgery
- Smaller Incisions, Less Scarring
- Faster Recovery & Shorter Hospital Stay
- Less Pain & Reduced Blood Loss
- Lower Risk of Infection & Complications
Myths & Facts
Fact: Thanks to advances in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS), it is often possible to remove fibroids or cysts without the need for a hysterectomy. Depending on the patient's condition, organ-preserving surgery can be an option, allowing the uterus to be preserved.
Fact: Thanks to niche skillset and advancements in technology, MIS techniques can be used to remove large and multiple fibroids (even as large as 15cm), and large ovarian cysts sometimes as large as 20cm.
Feasibility depends on factors including the location and subtype of fibroids as well as the surgeon’s expertise.
Dr. Michelle has successfully removed a 15cm fibroid and a 20cm cyst with Minimally Invasive Surgery without the need for open surgery.
Always consult with a specialised surgeon to determine the best approach for your condition.
Fact: One of the key benefits of MIS is its ability to preserve fertility. By using advanced techniques such as suturing or hemostatic agents, MIS reduces damage to the ovaries and uterus, helping many women retain their reproductive potential
